23 Dec My favorite SUPERFOODS [they should be your favorite too ;)] !
Though there is no legal or medical definition, superfoods are nutrient powerhouses that pack large doses of antioxidants, polyphenols, vitamins, and minerals. Eating them may reduce the risk of chronic disease, and prolong life, and people who eat more of them tend to be healthier and thinner than those who don’t.
Avocado- This is reserved as my #1 favorite superfood ever! I have avocado every day for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or as a snack. Besides it’s obvious delicious taste, it contains so many powerful nutrients that make it a staple in most of my meals. It reduces weight, regulates blood sugar levels, lowers cholesterol, protects against cancer, and promotes brain health. It’s a great source of protein, healthy fats, and potassium (more than bananas).
Blueberries – These berries are full of phytonutrients that neutralize free radicals (agents that cause aging and cell damage). The antioxidants in blueberries may also protect against cancer (see the trend of fighting cancer in superfoods?) and reduce the effects of age-related conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. Blueberries are part of my pre-workout shake or meal, and a staple in my everyday diet. Sometimes I like to just munch on them when they’re frozen during a movie, especially in the summertime.
Black Beans – I may seem bias to consider black beans as a superfood considering since I’m hispanic, but cup of black beans packs an incredible 15 grams of protein, with none of the artery-clogging saturated fat found in meat. Plus, they’re full of heart-healthy fiber, antioxidants, and energy-boosting iron. I don’t have more than a cup of black beans in one day though…that fiber ;D
Oats – Full of fiber, oats are a rich source of magnesium , potassium, and phytonutrients. Magnesium is responsible for over 300 biochemical processes in your body, from maintaining muscle and nerve function, to brain health, to building bones, to supporting the immune system and making the heart rhythm steady (especially important for me since I was born with heart arrhythmia). Oats also contain a special type of fiber that helps to lower cholesterol and prevent heart disease. It’s easy to cook, or you can have it raw in the form of a smoothie or homemade protein bars.
Turmeric – Actually, this is a spice, but it’s health benefits lands it in my favorite superfoods category. It’s loaded with anti-inflammatory properties and antioxidants. Compounds in turmeric have shown to do things from reduce joint pain, to cutting off the blood supply to cancer cells, and even promote repair to the stem cells in your brain! I have the supplement version that I take every day, but I usually add it into my tofu scramble for breakfast. It does stain your spatula.. just a heads up 🙂
There are plenty of other superfoods to choose from, these are just my top favorites and the ones I have in most of my daily meals. You can exercise all you want, but that won’t result in good health if you aren’t in taking the proper nutrients.
